Emergency tarping
Buying time when the roof cannot be fixed today
Water that gets past the roof usually shows on the siding next, so siding damage and roof problems are frequently found together. Vinyl cracks and comes loose in wind, fiber cement holds up well but fails at joints and penetrations, and wood rots wherever a detail lets water sit. Repair is generally straightforward; the useful part is working out what put water there in the first place.
Oxford sits in the metro Atlanta hail and wind corridor. Spring storm season here does two kinds of damage, and only one of them is obvious. Straight-line wind lifts shingle tabs, breaks the seal strip underneath, and drops them back down looking untouched — the roof then leaks in the next storm from a spot that shows nothing from the ground. Hail does the other kind, bruising the mat under the granules so the shingle fails months later. Housing stock across Newton County skews newer and denser than most of the state, which means a lot of architectural asphalt in the 10-to-20-year band where the seal strip is past its best but the roof is nowhere near replacement.
Oxford has a population of about 2,308, and the housing stock here sets the pattern for what fails first on a roof.
Usually a roof or flashing detail above it directing water onto the wall rather than away. Replacing the siding without fixing that just resets the clock on the same damage.
Often, though colour fades with exposure so new panels tend to look brighter at first. Where a profile is discontinued, panels are sometimes taken from a less visible elevation and the new stock used there.
